Introduction

XAMPP is a free and open source cross-platform web server solution stack package, consisting mainly of the Apache HTTP Server, MySQL database, and interpreters for scripts written in the PHP and Perl programming languages.

XAMPP is a collection of easy-to-install web servers – in other words, programs that let you test dynamic web pages locally.

Setting up an web server isn’t always an easy job, so to make it as efficient and quick as possible, download XAMPP, which includes Apache, MySQL, PHP, PEAR, PERL, OpenSSL, FileZilla FTP Server, Mercury Mail and more. These are the instruments you’ll need to create your databases and/or manage web sites.

Xampp is an application that helps to run local server in your computer. It is a tedious job to install Apache web server, MYSQL, PHP, Perl individually on your Ubuntu system. So this problem can be solved by Xampp application which includes Apache Web Server, MySQL, PHP, Perl into a single file. Hence, Xampp provide all the features in a single application and the installation of Xampp is also easy as compared to install these applications individually. Xampp is available for almost all famous Operating systems such as Windows, Mac, and Linux. The installation of Xampp is little bit difficult in Linux as compared to Windows and Mac OS X. If you are searching for lampp then you are in right place because Xampp is previously known as Lampp.

Step Wise Installation of XAMPP on Ubuntu

Step 1 : Before beginning the installation, First download the latest version of Xampp for your Ubuntu system. You can download xampp from their official website. or else you can also download Xampp by running the following command in the terminal using wget command.
$ wget http://www.apachefriends.org/download.php?xampp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz
Step 2 : After downloading the file place it on the desktop. Don’t extract the file.

Step 3 : Now, to install the Xampp on your Ubuntu system you have to log into root directory. Now run the following command in the terminal to log into root directory on your Ubuntu system.
$ sudo -s
Then with the help of cd command change your directory to Desktop.
$ cd Desktop
Step 4 : Next, run the following command in the terminal to extract the downloaded file into /opt directory.
$ tar xfvz xamp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz -C /opt
(Note : This tutorial is designed for Xampp 1.7.3 version. You can also place the Xampp-linux-1.7.3a with other version if you want to install other latest version on your Ubuntu system). After this step you will find Xampp in /opt/lampp directory.)

Step 5 : Next, After installing Xampp on your Ubuntu system whenever you try to paste anything to htdocs you will get permission denied error. Therefore to fix this error you have to run the following command in the terminal to solve the permission problem of htdocs.
$ sudo chmod 777 -R /opt/lampp/htdocs/
This command changes the ownership of the htdocs folder to your user, the -R option makes the command recursive so all permissions of folders and files inside htdocs are changed as well.

Step 6 : Finally you can operate Xampp on Linux Using your Ubuntu system's terminal. On Linux systems, you can operate Xampp with the help of terminal. The operating instructions are given below in this step.

#1. To start the Xampp on your Ubuntu system, run the following command in the terminal.
$ /opt/lampp/lampp start
#2. To Stop the Xampp on your Ubuntu system, run the following command in the terminal.
/opt/lampp/lampp stop
That's All and now enjoy to working on Xampp web server on your Ubuntu system.
